The neigh_list with batadv_hardif_neigh_node objects is accessed with only rcu_read_lock in batadv_neigh_node_get and batadv_iv_neigh_print. Thus it is not allowed to kfree the object before the rcu grace period ends (which may still protects context accessing this object). Therefore the object has first to be removed from the neigh_list and then it has either wait with synchronize_rcu or call_rcu till the grace period ends before it can be freed.

batadv_nc_node_release instead of batadv_claim_release?
It is not allowed to free the memory of an object which is part of a list which is protected by rcu-read-side-critical sections without making sure that no other context is accessing the object anymore. This usually happens by removing the references to this object and then waiting until the rcu grace period is over and no one (allowedly) accesses it anymore.
But the _now functions ignore this completely. They free the object directly even when a different context still tries to access it. This has to be avoided and thus these functions must be removed and all functions have to use batadv_orig_node_free_ref.

Hm, this trades one bug for an intermediate one, a nested call-rcu. Swapping this patch with patch number 9 to avoid this? (tried that an the diffs seem cleaner to me after swapping; or am I missing something?)
Despite from that, both patches 7 and 9 seem sane to me.

Actually, forget about that. Just noticed, one way or another there will be one intermediate bug. Don't see another way for that right now either.
This has to be avoided and thus these functions must be removed and all functions have to use batadv_neigh_ifinfo_free_ref.

Urgh, could catch, that's a nasty one! Should be put into maint at least thrice ;).
Nit: I think you mean "batadv_hardif_neigh_get" instead of "batadv_neigh_node_get" in the commit message?
The whole patchset looks pretty good to me.
Checked all patches for bugs but couldn't find any - could only find minor style issues.
Patches 1 to 9 are definitely a must for maint. Nasty bugs...
Did not check:
* Whether "Fixes:" tags match * How kref compares to atomic_t under the hood, whether it is currently basically the same or whether a switch fixes some bugs
Great patchset! :)
Cheers, Linus
PS: Just to clarify, patch 10 is only a style patch, right?

Thanks for the review. I've already started to fix the stuff you found. I will submit the new patchset (v4) later.

kref is basically a wrapper around atomic_t. So it should not fix any bugs.

Yes, it is more a style patch to make everything more consistent.
Kind regards, Sven
