Hi,
for those following the mailing list and other events around the B.A.T.M.A.N. team the term 'B.A.T.M.A.N. V' probably sounds all too familiar. It has been more than 5 years since the first ideas for improving the routing protocol were exchanged. In the following years we had several GSoC projects dedicated to pull this topic forward, countless hack & brainstorming sessions (including sleepless nights at each battlemesh). Turns out, replacing a mature protocol like B.A.T.M.A.N. IV takes more effort than you might think.
Another hurdle we kept running into was the missing separation between routing logic and feature code preventing any developer and/or tester to quickly switch from one protocol to the other. Now we have finally completed hiding all routing logic behind an internal API allowing to change the routing protocol while still benefiting from all the layer2 features.
With this mail the B.A.T.M.A.N. team announces the availability of the latest protocol revision: B.A.T.M.A.N. V. Major features are its throughput based path metric and packet type separation. For a high level overview about the differences to B.A.T.M.A.N. IV feel invited to continue reading[1]. Technical protocol specs also are available [2][3].
The code has already undergone stability and performance testing[4], thus is considered ready for a wider audience testing. In the coming weeks said patches will be included in the main source tree and sent upstream to the kernel maintainers. Comments and feedback are welcome!
Next steps involve finishing the throughout meter[5] to enrich B.A.T.M.A.N. V with an automatic link throughput detection when other mechanisms fail.
Happy routing, The B.A.T.M.A.N. team

This allows us to easily add a sysfs parameter for an unsigned int later, which is not for a batman mesh interface (e.g. bat0), but for a common interface instead. It allows reading and writing an atomic_t in hard_iface (instead of bat_priv compared to the mesh variant).

The B.A.T.M.A.N. protocol originally only used a single message type (called OGM) to determine the link qualities to the direct neighbors and spreading these link quality information through the whole mesh. This procedure is summarized on the BATMAN concept page and explained in details in the RFC draft published in 2008.
This approach was chosen for its simplicity during the protocol design phase and the implementation. However, it also bears some drawbacks:
* Wireless interfaces usually come with some packet loss, therefore a higher broadcast rate is desirable to allow a fast reaction on flaky connections. Other interfaces of the same host might be connected to Ethernet LANs / VPNs / etc which rarely exhibit packet loss would benefit from a lower broadcast rate to reduce overhead. * It generally is more desirable to detect local link quality changes at a faster rate than propagating all these changes through the entire mesh (the far end of the mesh does not need to care about local link quality changes that much). Other optimizations strategies, like reducing overhead, might be possible if OGMs weren't used for all tasks in the mesh at the same time.
As a result detecting local link qualities shall be handled by an independent message type, ELP, whereas the OGM message type remains responsible for flooding the mesh with these link quality information and determining the overall path transmit qualities.

This parameter can be set individually on each interface and allows the configuration of the elp interval for the link quality measurements during runtime. Usually it is desirable to set it to a higher (= slower) value on interfaces which have a more static characteristic (e.g. wired interfaces) or very dense neighbourhoods to reduce overhead.

From: Antonio Quartulli antonio@open-mesh.com
This is the initial implementation of the new OGM protocol (version 2). It has been designed to work on top of the newly added ELP.
In the previous version the OGM protocol was used to both measure link qualities and flood the network with the metric information. In this version the protocol is in charge of the latter task only, leaving the former to ELP.
This means being able to decouple the interval used by the neighbor discovery from the OGM broadcasting, which revealed to be costly in dense networks and needed to be relaxed so leading to a less responsive routing protocol.

From: Antonio Quartulli antonio@open-mesh.com
This attribute is exported to user space to disable the link throughput auto-detection by setting a fixed value. The throughput override value is used when batman-adv is computing the link throughput towards a neighbour.
If the value is set to 0 then batman-adv will try to detect the throughput by itself.

From: Antonio Quartulli antonio@open-mesh.com
To enable ELP to send probing packets over wireless links only if needed, batman-adv must keep track of the last time it sent a unicast packet towards every neighbour.
For this purpose a 2 main changes are introduced: 1) a new member of the elp_neigh_node structure stores the last time a unicast packet was sent towards this neighbour; 2) a wrapper function for sending unicast packets is implemented. This function will simply update the member describe din point 1) and then forward the packet to the real sending routine.
Point 2) implies that any code-path leading to a unicast sending now has to use the new wrapper.

In case of wireless interface retrieve the throughput by querying cfg80211. To perform this call a separate work must be scheduled because the function may sleep and this is not allowed within an RCU protected context (RCU in this case is used to iterate over all the neighbours).
Use ethtool to retrieve information about an Ethernet link like HALF/FULL_DUPLEX and advertised bandwidth (e.g. 100/10Mbps).
The metric is updated each time a new ELP packet is sent, this way it is possible to timely react to a metric variation which can imply (for example) a neighbour disconnection.

In case of an unused wireless link, the mac80211 throughput estimation won't get updated further. Consequently, the reported throughput metric will become obsolete.
With this patch unicast sampling is introduced by periodically sending unicast ELP packets to each neighbor on idle WiFi links. These sampling packets will fill an entire frame, so that the measurement is as reliable as possible

Hi,
It's nice to see how the whole BATMAN V idea has matured over the years and both the documentation and code having become very clean and simple to read :).
However, I think there is at least one more bug in the specification that needs fixing, the one I had mentioned to Simon some days ago on IRC, that with the current writing, there would never be a selected router.
There are also two more things I would (still) like to discuss regarding the OGMv2 specification in the wiki:
* Is the check "If the received neighbor is not (yet) a router, drop the OGMv2" still necessary? If yes why?
* Suggestion: Change "If the OGMv2 sequence number is not newer or equal compared to the last received OGMV2 (from any neighbor for this originator) and if the throughput is not better, drop the OGMv2" to: "[...] (from the currently selected router for this originator) [...]"
(-> is another sequence number check here redundant? see "Age check above"? maybe some merging+reordering here?)
* What does "is adopted"/"are applied" mean in section 3.2.2 and section 4? Maybe clarify when the internal stats are updated and when the OGMv2? ->
* Suggestion: * Move "forward penalties are applied" to section 4 and change it to "forward penalties are applied to the OGMv2" * Change "Path Throughput is adopted if its lower than the link throughput to the neighbor, otherwise the link throuput is adopted" to: "If the link throughput to the neighbor this OGMv2 was received from is lower than the Path Throughput of the OGMv2 then set the Path Throughput of the OGMv2 to this link throughput." * Remove "The Path throughput for the considered outoging interface is adopted" from section 4.
Also, I guess there is some awareness about potentially slow convergence speeds. One of the reasons the idea with "RIP" occured. But I think next to dead nodes, there are some more scenarios with slow convergence speeds which depends on the latency of links. Going to write a wiki page with pictures on that, I think it should at least be documented before a release (I'd have some ideas to fix it later in a backwards compatible way, ensuring a convergence within one sequence number - it fact that fix was in the original OGMv2 page I had written back then ;) ).
Cheers, Linus

Scratch that remark, I missed something (just noticed while making a wiki page describing it).

Another issue I just noticed with the according sentence we have in the spec right now:
Bad news never travells:
We would ignore updates from our selected router if the path throughput got worse - even if it's a new sequence number.
* Add a branch: If seqno is new + from currently selected router: -> accept (even if path throughput is lower than with the previous seqno)

I think you are trying to say the same as what is written - just reverting the condition to say "accept".
The spec says:
if (NOT(seqno newer or equal) AND NOT(better throughput)) then DROP
Therefore the statement "if the OGM is newer then accept it" is part of this condition already, no ? Moreover, correct me if I am wrong, but any new OGM should be accepted at this step, not only those arriving from the selected router, hence your statement would be also a bit confusing imho.

Hi,
quick summary of the discussion we had:
- Is the check "If the received neighbor is not (yet) a router, drop the OGMv2" still necessary? If yes why?
that appeared to be a simple misunderstanding of our documentation. The phrase was updated to:
If the OGMv2 was received through a neighbor that is not (yet) a router, drop the OGMv2.
If the neighbor is not known the link throughput also is not known which is a requirement for the protocol to function.
Suggestion: Change "If the OGMv2 sequence number is not newer or equal compared to the last received OGMV2 (from any neighbor for this originator) and if the throughput is not better, drop the OGMv2" to: "[...] (from the currently selected router for this originator) [...]"
(-> is another sequence number check here redundant? see "Age check above"? maybe some merging+reordering here?)
Yes, you are right - this seems redundant. The second 'age' check has been removed from the documentation.
- What does "is adopted"/"are applied" mean in section 3.2.2 and section 4? Maybe clarify when the internal stats are updated and when the OGMv2?
Each of the mentioned sections clearly states the intend:
* 3.2.2: If the initial checks above have passed, the internal stats are updated .. * 4: When an OGMv2 is to be re-broadcasted some of the message fields must be changed others must be left unchanged. All fields not mentioned in the following section remain untouched:
- Suggestion:
- Move "forward penalties are applied" to section 4 and change it to "forward penalties are applied to the OGMv2"
Forward penalties are applied on reception but only to routing tables used for forwarding.
- Change "Path Throughput is adopted if its lower than the link throughput to the neighbor, otherwise the link throuput is adopted" to: "If the link throughput to the neighbor this OGMv2 was received from is lower than the Path Throughput of the OGMv2 then set the Path Throughput of the OGMv2 to this link throughput."
Good suggestion! We changed it to:
If the link throughput to the neighbor this OGMv2 was forwarded by is lower than the path throughput of the OGMv2, then this lower link throughput is adopted.
- Remove "The Path throughput for the considered outoging interface is adopted" from section 4.
Forward penalties are applied on a per-outgoing interface basis. This can not be done in a global manner.
Thanks again for the thorough review!
Cheers, Marek
