Recommended: Embedded router with broadcom chipset - Buffalo WHR-G54S, Linksys WRT54GL or similar, running OpenWRT. Proprietary broadcom driver works best in ad-hoc mode. This is stress-tested with up to 30 neighbors in Freifunk mesh networks. If you have mains power, Buffalo is much cheaper. If you want to power with batteries/solarpower use the Linksys.
