[B.A.T.M.A.N.] multicast packet loss

Hi all! I am experiencing a multicast packet loss on batman-adv mesh, this can appear normal but it is not because the mesh is on top of wired Ethernet link! the host fe80::c8e0:2cff:fe9b:6d1f is sending a multicast hello message every 4 seconds on bat0 interface, but as you can see from the dump timing on a machine attached on the same switch they are not arriving regurarly so what is happening? (which roughly translates as "batman gone nuts?") Hey great devs! we've been having a particular issue in deltalibre and quintanalibre (local WCN) with batman-adv, but so far we haven't found a precise way to reproduce it. The symptom is that (after some reboots or physical displacements?) one batman-adv host becomes unreachable on layer3, although it is seen on originators table, and can be batctl ping'ed or batctl tracerout'ed with no problem whatsoever. Even more, it not unreachable from the whole network, but instead from just a few other nodes. So, let's say that the nearer nodes can layer3 ping it , but some others farther away cannot (although i can't assure it depends on the hop distance) All of them can batctl ping it (layer2) A hard reboot of all the nodes solves it, connectivity is restored in all directions. Thing is, I've just came across it again, and managed to do some tests to aid in description / debugging As an aid in understanding network topology, I'm attaching the wonderful output of "batctl vd dot |grep -v TT" for your viewing delight problem node is ana it can be reached from ruth and hquilla (direct neighbours) but arping behaves erratically from colmena or charly and normal ping (v4 or v6) doesn't receive any reply at all when run from colmena or charly I used arping, with and without -b , and seemed like i could narrow the problem down to incoming broadcast packet handling, but further tests just left me more puzzled! all nodes are tl-mr3220 running openwrt trunk r31316 with batman-adv 2012.2.0 , driver ath9k secondary interfaces named _wlan1 are all tl-wn722n which uses driver ath9k_htc nodes are around 100meters (+/-50mts) apart from each other this behaviour has been observed (but not reported) in dissimilar setups, using ubnt bullet2 mixed with mr3220, running r29936 with batman-adv 2011.4.0 , with nodes 1 or 2km apart from each other. [B.A.T.M.A.N.] Problems with internet connection in a mesh-network, (and dhcp and wireless access)

Hi all I wrote recently about problems with our batman-adv mesh implementation in a development proyect in Peru: https://lists.open-mesh.org/pipermail/b.a.t.m.a.n/2012-August/007820.html Now we are having problems again. Our mesh-network are formed with Ubiquiti nanostation M5 nodes running OpenWRT(10.03.x, r32751)+ Batman-adv 2.6.32. In one of the nodes, the wan gate is connected with Public IP to internet and I can access to internet from there. But from a laptop(without batman-adv), I can make ping to all the nodes of the mesh, but i can't make ping to 8.8.8.8 neither the Ip public gateway. However, I can make ping to my Ip Public, in the interface wan of my gateway node. What am I doing wrong? I have tried to write static routes, but I think that the problem is about the mesh-bridge. Is it beacuse of i need do NAT? All the nodes of the mesh can see themselves, and I set the node with the gateway to internet like the gateway of the mesh, but it does not work. Any help or comment? Hi all I`m working on a academic develop project for improve the networks in rural areas in Peru. We are doing some test with 6 Nanostation M5 for create a mesh network. I tried Commotion software with OLSR and all was Ok. Now, we are testing BATMAN, with OpenWRT and batman-adv module, but I have some problems. I have compiled OpenWrt Backfire r32751 (Load: 0.09 0.10 0.05) and installed batman-adv with opkg following this http://wiki.openwrt.org/inbox/mesh.batman When I put: lsmod | grep batman I get batman_adv 67936 0 and seems to be load in the kernel But when I try to add the interface wlan0 for activate batman in it, the Nanostation remains locked and i need to reboot. I have tried this with: echo bat0 > /sys/class/net/wlan0/batman_adv/mesh_iface and batctl if add wlan0 with the same bad result. What am i doing wrong? [B.A.T.M.A.N.] RFC: Migration to a new git server backend

Hi, maybe some of you have seen that I talked in the channel to Antonio whether we should migrate to a different solution to serve our git repositories. This is (in my opinion) a good idea because gitosis [1] (the software that we are currently using) isn't maintained anymore and will be dropped [2] in the next version of Debian. My preferred replacement is gitolite [3]. I already talked with Simon and discussed what side effect this could have. Maybe side effects is not the correct word to describe it... lets call it options. Gitolite allows to define access rights for refs. For people that are not familiar with the storage in git: You can for example say that people can only commit to branches with a specific prefix. Just to give an example. We want that only the release team can create tags -> refs/tags/ is only marked for the release team as read-write. Now we have more interesting features like ordex is only allowed to write in branches starting with ordex/ -> refs/heads/ordex/ is marked as rw for ordex. Now the question is: Do we want to use this feature or not. We had following ideas: 1. 1 repository per project use only one repo for each project (batman-adv, batctl, batmand, ...) and use branch namespaces for individual users: * master, next, maint for the main stuff * ordex/ (for example ordex/dat), hundeboll/, ... for users * tags only for release team 2. 2 repositories per project use one official repo for each project (batman-adv, batctl, batmand, ...) and one for other people * master, next, maint in both repos (synced from the main one) * ordex/ (for example ordex/dat), hundeboll/, ... for users in the second repo * tags in both repositories allowed (but in the second repo only with user prefix) 3. 1+x repositories per project Keep everything like now * master, next, maint for the main stuff * each user has his own copy of the main repo in his user folder * tags can freely commit in his own repo Special repositories with big differences like linux-merge are kept in a special repository. Any other suggestions? Do you prefer any idea? Please also add other ideas like "user folder names for idea 3 have to start with a ~ and non-user folder names have to start with a +". In first step all work fine, bring up bat0 on client, bring up dhcp on it, it get ip address and work fine. but if i just bring bat0 on client down then up it don't work, it see gateway, i see dhcp request and replies on server on bat0, but on mesh node and client i don't see any reply in batctl tr nor tcpdump and it stay in this state forever. But, if i bring bat0 on client down, wait 200 seconds until client is removed from originators on server by timeout and bring bat0 on client back up it starts working again and get ip from dhcp server. Hello again, can't determine exactly since when, but avahi is acting funny in QuintanaLibre :( two computers (pbx and veci) connected to different nodes in the mesh can't always resolve hostnames through avahi pbx ]=eth==[ nicoyjesi --> .. --> .. --> wlan1(czuk)wlan0 <--> natychucho ]==eth=[ veci (cf. attached dotgraph) question from pbx is broadcasted perfectly and reaches veci, veci replies, natychucho broadcasts the replly through wifi , gets to czuk wlan0, but czuk doesn't re-broadcast it , silently dropping the packet. relevant tcpdump http://pastebin.com/6xLmDqe5 you can see question coming in through czuk(wlan1), rebroadcasted through czuk(wlan0), reach veci, veci reply, czuk(wlan0) gets reply, but doesn't retransmit it through czuk(wlan1) :( iptables @ czuk looks sane http://pastebin.com/mFUFuNdC ## czuk has two wifi interfaces, both in ap mode, managed by batman ## natychucho is connected to wlan0 in client mode, ## and cisterna is client to wlan1. no WDS whatsoever. root@czuk:~# batctl if wlan0: active wlan1: active root@czuk:~# brctl show bridge name bridge id STP enabled interfaces br-lan 8000.54e6fcb98e2b no eth0 bat0 complete live config can be lurked in https://bitbucket.org/nicoechaniz/quintanalibre-configs/src/d9bd3603824d/cz… I don't find any reason batman would be involved in this, but iptables is discarded as a suspect, and AFAICS there are no other factors messing with the packets (maybe it's a bit late night :) ). No bridges whatsoever. In fact, packet is catched by batctl td coming in at wlan0. Any hints or experiences will be greatly appreciated as always! Gui

[B.A.T.M.A.N.] batman-adv not selecting a gateway when using "client 1" through uci config

Hi everyone, I've been experimenting with gateway selection in QuintanaLibre. I have a very bad gateway that I want to work as a last resort gateway when the other is down, so I tried changing to gw_mode client 1 and used some unreal values for the Up/Down speeds to "force" the selection. Anyway, this is all well, the good gateway gets selected from almost all the mesh, but the problem is that when I updated the client routers configuration using uci to make it permanent, I stumbled with this strange result that you can see here: http://pastebin.com/pEhcq2TW there's no gateway being selected until I manually run: # batctl gw_mode client 1 (which was te current mode anyway) on each client. In fact, connected computers are not being served DHCP offers because of this. Is this some known behavior or just something I overlooked? Thanks as ever for your help with batman-adv, which here at the far south we are loving every day more as little mesh clouds keep spawning around us :) Cheers, NicoEchániz
