The multicast optimizations in batman-adv are yet only usable and enabled in non-bridged scenarios. To be able to support bridged setups batman-adv needs to be able to detect IGMP/MLD queriers and reports on mesh nodes without bridges, too. See the following link for details: http://www.open-mesh.org/projects/batman-adv/wiki/Multicast-optimizations-l… To avoid duplicate code between the bridge and batman-adv, the IGMP/MLD message validation code is moved from the bridge to the IPv4/IPv6 stack. On the way, some refactoring to increase readability and to iron out some subtle differences between the IGMP and MLD parsing code is done. The last round of multicast patches send to the batman-adv mailinglist to add support for the multicast optimizations in bridged scenarios, too, unfortunately had one major conceptual flaw: It could lead to packet loss. It's not sufficient to have the unicasting of reports implemented on bridge-nodes only. Nodes without bridges need to treat reports the same way. The issue is described in detail here: https://www.open-mesh.org/projects/batman-adv/wiki/Multicast-optimizations-… I'd also be interested in what the netdev/bridge people think about patches #1 and #2 in particular, therefore including the according mailinglists now. batctl-2014.4.0 fails to build with musl, mostly because of somewhat weird netinet/*.h headers musl provides, but the problem turns out to be easy to fix. musl does not allow including netinet/* and linux/* headers together. batctl includes netinet/if_ether.h indirectly via net/ethernet.h, so netinet/if_ether.h must be used instead of linux/if_ether.h. __be16 and __be32 are linux-specific typedefs for uint16_t and uint32_t with __attribute__((bitwise)) that has no effect outside of the kernel. Replacing them with uint16_t and uint32_t removes dependency on linux/types.h. The current approach for the compat layer is to include the compat.h file at exactly the right time to provide additional functionality and to live patch the batman-adv sources. This has the problem that the compat.h file becomes harder to read over time. Also live patching and adding of missing functionality partially conflict. This becomes obvious when the include order in some files is different compared to the one the author of an compat.h entry expected. A different approach is to inject intermediate header files which add additional features. This allows to reduce the size of compat.h and only leaves the live patching part in it. The compat.h can then added automatically to each compile run before anything else is included. compat.h has therefore the control which headers must be included before the live patching of the batman-adv source can begin. musl does not allow including netinet/* and linux/* headers together. batctl includes netinet/if_ether.h indirectly via net/ethernet.h, so netinet/if_ether.h must be used instead of linux/if_ether.h. __be16 and __be32 are linux-specific typedefs for uint16_t and uint32_t with __attribute__((bitwise)) that has no effect outside of the kernel. Replacing them with uint16_t and uint32_t removes dependency on linux/types.h.
